Optimization of formic acid hydrolysis of corn cob in xylose production
نویسندگان
چکیده
−Dilute acid pretreatment of lignocellulosic material is one of the significant steps in a biorefinery. We used response surface methodology to determine the important factors of formic acid concentration (2%-6% wt%), treatment time (30-150 min), reaction temperature (120-160 oC), and liquid to solid ratio (3-11 mL/g) on dilute acid hydrolysis of corn cob to produce xylose. A xylose yield of 81.6% and selectivity of 15.1 g/g were achieved under the optimal conditions (5% acid concentration, 150 min, 135 oC, and 7 mL/g liquid to solid ratio). The addition of trivalent salts (FeCl3, Fe(NO3)3, and Fe2(SO4)3) to the reaction system enhanced the xylose yield but decreased selectivity. The FeCl3 concentration over 0.75 mol/L had a negative effect on xylose production.

Lipid production from diverse oleaginous yeasts from steam exploded corn cobs
Corn cob hydrolysate was used as substrate for growth and lipid accumulation via oleaginous yeast species. A mass based suspension of 10 g 100 g corn cob hydrolysate contained 26.0 g L glucose, 8.5 g L xylose. The inhibitor concentrations were 0.16 g L acetic acid, 1.50 g L formic acid, 0.48 g L HMF and 0.06 g L furfural. These conditions reduced the cell growth of non-adapted yeast. Successful...
متن کاملAcidic and enzymatic saccharification of waste agricultural biomass for biotechnological production of xylitol
BACKGROUND The plant biomass and agro-industrial wastes show great potential for their use as attractive low cost substrates in biotechnological processes. Wheat straw and corn cob as hemicellulosic substrates were acid hydrolyzed and enzymatically saccharified for high xylose production. The hydrolysate was concentrated and fermented by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kluyveromyces for prod...
متن کاملXylanase Production by a Thermo-tolerant Bacillus Species under Solid-state and Submerged Fermentation
Effects of xylose on xylanase production by a thermophilic Bacillus sp showed diverse patterns on corn cob (CC) and wheat bran (WB) as sole carbon sources in solidstate fermentation (SSF) and submerged fermentation (SmF). Supplementation of these media with either mineral salt solution (MSS) or yeast extract peptone (YEP) also exerted variable effects. While under SSF, xylose stimulated xylanas...
متن کاملEnhanced production of xylanase by solid state fermentation using Trichoderma koeningi isolate: effect of pretreated agro-residues
The main objective of this study was to isolate the fungal strain for enhanced production of xylanase using different agro-residues and fruit peels by solid state fermentation and its potentiality was tested on the pretreated corn cob. Fermentation was carried out with Trichoderma koeningi isolate using untreated and pretreated corn cob supplemented with pineapple peel powder showed higher prod...
متن کاملResponse surface methodology (RSM) to evaluate moisture effects on corn stover in recovering xylose by DEO hydrolysis.
Response surface methodology (RSM), based on a 2(2) full factorial design, evaluated the moisture effects in recovering xylose by diethyloxalate (DEO) hydrolysis. Experiments were carried out in laboratory reactors (10 mL glass ampoules) containing corn stover (0.5 g) properly ground. The ampoules were kept at 160 °C for 90 min. Both DEO concentration and corn stover moisture content were stati...
